Quick Reviews: Lee Gi Kwang’s “Predator” is so close

After listening to “Predator” by Highlight‘s Lee Gi Kwang for the past two days trying to decide exactly how I felt about it, I surprisingly found myself more frustrated than anything else despite enjoying the song.

While most are talking about the concept of “Predator” being similar to Taemin‘s “Advice, sonically the release is a lot more like Criminal. And quite frankly, I prefer the synths on this one, as it hooks you in from the start with that blaring riff. My frustration is that unlike Taemin, who always leaves his mark on the song, it’s almost like Lee Gi Kwang wanted to fade into the background. It mostly comes off like he’s looking for a place to hide on “Predator”, as if the production is literally the feature. While I expected at least the chorus to be where they pushed things, Lee Gi Kwang actually pulls back even further there instead of leaving an imprint.

That’s a lot of whining for a song that ultimately I could listen to and enjoy whenever it pops up, but it had that next level to it at his fingertips and it’s frustrating that it wasn’t taken.
