58-year-old man sentenced for 73 malicious comments against teenage trot singer Kim Dahyun, which touches on a few issues

In having-a-normal-one news, a 58-year-old man was sentenced to a two-year suspended sentence (four months in prison should he violate) for defaming 16-year-old trot singer Kim Dahyun and her father Kim Bong Gon, according to her agency Entrow Entertainment.

The man was indicted for posting a total of 73 insulting messages targeting Kim Da-hyun, and 67 additional posts about her father, a well-known public figure in education, on a broadcasting station’s online viewer forum between July and November 2023.

The court emphasized in its ruling, “Given the number and nature of the posts, the victims — especially the young female celebrity likely experienced considerable psychological distress. The level of culpability is high.”

Three things:

  1. What the fuck is wrong with people?
  2. The case is seen as a furthering of the perpetual war between the judiciary trying to strike a balance between freedom of speech and the increasing defamation/slander mills. I will say that the root problem — people believing bullshit seemingly en masse — isn’t addressed by any of this.
  3. Not that there’s any good age to expose people to this kind of deranged behavior, but it’s why specifically making kids public figures is particularly bad and is my point about the difference between trainees being in the system and idols debuting at like 12 or whatever these survival shows are trying.
