Almost a couple months ago, Yoo Ah In‘s legal troubles appeared to deepen, as after his drug use scandal he was subsequently accused of sexual assaulting a man. However, the most recent update is that police have decided to not pursue charges due to insufficient evidence.
Police have decided not to refer actor Yoo Ah-in to prosecutors over rape accusations a man filed against him, citing insufficient evidence, officials said Thursday.
A man in his 30s filed a complaint with the police in July, accusing the actor of raping him while he was asleep at a studio apartment in Seoul’s central district of Yongsan earlier in the month.
Yoo was subsequently booked on charges of imitative rape, which applies to cases of rape involving same-sex individuals.
The Yongsan Police Station determined last week that there was insufficient evidence to support the accusation and decided not to refer the case to the prosecution for further investigation, officials said.
I mention the accuser being a male both because it impacts the way the crime is handled, the media’s coverage of it, and also because it makes me wonder if it was more about the drugs yet again.
Earlier in September, Yoo was sentenced to one year in prison for habitually abusing illegal drugs between 2020 and 2022 and was immediately put under detention.
Yoo tested negative in a drug test conducted in connection with the rape accusation.
It’s kinda just thrown in at the end of a lot of the news articles, but the allegation allowed them to pursue a further drug test of the actor.
While trying to be respectful of the accuser, a part of me almost feels like they might not have pursued this at all if it didn’t give them a chance to drug test him again. I dunno, just that whole news cycle full of sensationalism and what not seemed designed to out him as gay and then portray them as being like sexual deviants or something, like it never even seemed to be about the potential victim.

Speaking of his drug use case, that was wrapped up earlier this month when he was sentenced to a year in prison and a two million won fine.
Actor Yoo Ah-in was sentenced to one year in prison on Tuesday for habitually abusing illegal drugs and was immediately put under detention.
The 38-year-old actor, whose latest works include the Netflix dark fantasy series “Hellbound,” faces charges of illegally using propofol, a medical anesthetic, under the pretext of cosmetic procedures on 181 occasions between 2020 and 2022.
He was also accused of abusing three other medical anesthetic drugs, including midazolam and ketamine.
Charges against him also include buying about 1,100 sleeping pills with prescriptions under other people’s names, smoking marijuana while in the United States in January, and coercing accomplices to withdraw testimonies against him.
The Seoul Central District Court on Tuesday sentenced the actor, whose legal name is Uhm Hong-sik, to one year behind bars and imposed a fine of 2 million won (US$1,490).
Notably, he was acquitted of attempts to tamper with evidence or witnesses.
The court convicted him of illegal drug purchases and abuse but found him not guilty of attempting to destroy evidence or coercion, citing insufficient evidence.
I mean I get it since it’s illegal and precedent is drugs are treated seriously in Korea, but like I don’t get how he gets actual time when Himchan gets a suspended sentence.
