MBC apologizes to NewJeans’ Minji for mocking her ‘kalguksu’ controversy, which continues to be a thing for some reason

About a week ago, Asian Junkie covered the ongoing “controversy” that NewJeans member Minji was facing over kalguksu, which she somehow felt the need to apologize for. It seemed pathetic that it got to that point in the first place, but I figured maybe that could be the end of it at least. Wrong.

Wrong.

Yesterday, MBC posted an article about Minji’s fashion while at Incheon International Airport, and decided it would be a good time to mock her for said “controversy”, making the title “NewJeans Minji, sharp beauty, international elegance“.

iMBC’s tweet featured a three-word poem: “Kal-guk (sharp) beauty Guk-jejeok (global) Su-ryeomham (elegant),” a wordplay on the first three syllables of Kalguksu noodles.

Thankfully, instead of people piling on, MBC got backlash for it from netizens, and they were forced into releasing an apology.

“iMBC Entertainment acknowledges the significance of artists’ intellectual property. A recent headline in our image article about NewJeans stirred controversy, prompting us to promptly remove it. We extend our apologies if this incident may have caused any harm to the artist and their company. iMBC is committed to diligently managing content to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.”

I’m sure similar kind of stupidity has happened in America before, but this sorta feels like CNN mocking Taylor Swift over wondering what kind of burger she was getting or something, which I think most people would think is insane.

Like I’ve always said, people who are way too online being shitheads is to be expected, but somehow it seems all of that becomes issues mainstream Korean media end of validating for some reason and then it’s spread far and wide.

This has to be one of the dumbest things to get traction is a while.
