Normally when there’s plagiarism allegations, it’s some random YouTuber/anti/fandom war shit, so color me surprised that the latest high profile one was actually from the composer himself. Indeed Yang Joon Young, who did Fin.K.L‘s “Time Of Mask” off their SPECIAL album in 2000, has accused Jungkook‘s hit “Seven” of being a rip off.
The accusation claims the songs have the same scale sequence, and he sent a request to HYBE/Big Hit Music for evaluation.
On August 22, one media outlet reported that Jungkook’s “Seven” allegedly borrowed a main portion of Fin.K.L’s song “Time of mask,” which was released in 2000.
Big Hit, the agency of BTS and Jungkook, responded and denied the allegations by providing just about what most people would think.
In response to the allegations, BTS’s agency BIGHIT MUSIC stated, “We would like to inform you that the claims of copyright infringement regarding Jungkook’s ‘Seven’ are not true.”
They continued, “‘Seven’ is a song that was made through the collaboration of five foreign composers, and it is a creation that is completely unrelated to the song on a domestic album from 24 years ago like some are claiming. They are one-sided claims that do not meet any criteria such as substantial similarity and principles in determining plagiarism.”
I don’t know whether or not the claim is technically correct, but just by listening to the two songs, I really have no idea what’s going on with this. Seems out of left field.
