Following her drunk driving scandal back in May of last year, Kim Sae Ron has kept herself busy trying to dodge consequences for it in court. She has claimed financial hardship in court, faked working part-time at a coffee company, and denied owning the luxuries that were previously shown/bragged about on TV programs.
After being sentenced to just a fine of ~$15k for her DUI, she told the press that she never tried to victimize herself by claiming financial hardship. KSR said it was fake news, apparently, and that she couldn’t clarify some of the stories because she was scared.
“It was true that I drove under the influence, and I was wrong for that, so I have nothing to say. I will make sure nothing like this happens again in the future. I never claimed I was struggling financially. It is true that I’m currently working part-time and that the penalty fee cost a lot.”
That is … well, it’s a hell of a thing to claim when on March 8 she told the court that she was having trouble making ends meet.
“This will never happen again. I’m sorry. I regret my actions and am reflecting on them. I’ve quit drinking and sold my vehicle. I’m the breadwinner for my family, but it has been difficult for me to make ends meet. Please have mercy.”
Her representatives, six high-powered lawyers by the way, also ran with that story to the court.
“Kim Saeron is the breadwinner of her family. She is currently suffering from financial difficulties because of the compensation fee she had to pay for the accident. She is currently working part-time to make ends meet.”
There’s only one thing this immediately reminded me of when I saw the story:
At least in the case of Rick James, he used all the drugs in the world to get to that point.
Seriously though, I realize generating sympathy is a strategy for criminals around the world, but man it’s truly amazing how much just begging pathetically and showing up in a wheelchair and saying you have all kinds of fucked up shit going on is the go-to strategy for the Korea’s best lawyers when their client gets caught red-headed … because it works.
