A bit over a month ago, former BTOB member Ilhoon admitted that along with friends he purchased over $110k in marijuana over about a 30-month span. Now the court has handed down his sentence, which will be two years in prison and a six-figure fine.
On June 10, Jung Il Hoon’s sentencing hearing was held at the Seoul Central District Court. He was sentenced to two years in prison and fined 133 million won (approximately $119,200) for violating the Act on the Control of Narcotics, Etc., and he was taken under custody.
The court stated, “The defendants communicated through the dark web in order for their crime to not be easily detected, and they used elaborate criminal methods such as making transactions with the cryptocurrency bitcoin.” Regarding Jung Ilhoon and another defendant Park, the court said, “The two defendants played leading roles and carried out the criminal acts the highest number of times.”
An underreported part of this mess has been the role of crypto, and the court certainly appears to have handed down a harsher sentence because of it.
Given the strict laws and outlook in the country, Ilhoon had to know the risk, though obviously I don’t think he, or anybody, deserves prison time for purchasing or using weed.
Anyway, feel free to look through the replies to this.
