The previous episode of ‘V-1′ saw the completion of the initial one-on-one battles. The contestants advancing were Cherry Bullet’s Haeyoon, Weki Meki’s Suyeon, Dreamcatcher’s Siyeon, WJSN’s Yeonjung, SONAMOO’s High.D, and Venus’ Jung Da Kyung.
They then separated into groups of three and had a three-way competition to see who advanced to the final.
——
Cherry Bullet’s Haeyoon – g.o.d’s “Where You Belong”
Weki Meki’s Suyeon – SHINee’s “Y Si Fuera Ella”
Dreamcatcher’s Siyeon – EXO’s “Overdose”
I’ve been on Haeyoon’s side for a while now, but while this was probably her most dynamic performance, I did think it was her worst. Honestly, it was a lot of belting that verged on yelling, which is not a style I necessarily enjoy. Suyeon has been a nice surprise, with this more subtle performance that eventually showed range and included a ton of emotion.
Obviously I’m biased, but I did think Siyeon was easily the best in the group, which is likely why she won by the bigger margin than even the other finalist. She kinda lucked out with Haeyoon not delivering her best, but the rock reinvention was sorta right up her alley as well to showcase something different.
Siyeon ended up advancing with 38 votes.
WJSN’s Yeonjung – Taeyeon’s “Fine”
Venus’ Jeong Da Kyung – The One’s “Dear Love”
SONAMOO’s High.D – Lee Sun Hee’s “Fate”
Realistically this was the only chance they had to beat Yeonjung, as I don’t think covering a Taeyeon song really helped her all that much. Obviously she can effortlessly hit the notes, though the original is so known that it was hard not to compare and I did prefer Taeyeon.
I have no idea who Venus is, so Jeong Da Kyung has definitely done her duty by getting her group on the map. She has done about as well as could be expected and acquitted herself well, but running into Jungyeon … I mean it is what it is.
The unfamiliarity with the song probably made High.D’s showing my favorite as it was unique in terms of showcasing an older vocal style that had trot inflections dotted all over the place. She was really impressive, honestly.
Yeonjung won with 36 votes.
FINALE BITCHES
Dreamcatcher’s Siyeon – Kim Gun Mo’s “Seoul’s Moon”
WJSN’s Yeonjung – Lena Park’s “In Dreams”
Everybody was concerned about “Overdose” because of the EXO connection and not showcasing her vocals, but they remixed it well that it was probably her best and most true showing. In the finale though, she needed to just sing the type of ballad shit that audiences like. Just belt for three minutes straight or whatever even if I would hate it. Instead, she went for a subtly blues-y effort emphasizing a lot of her lower register, which was great don’t get me wrong, but also made it difficult to take down Yeonjung with.
Yeah, this is what I would’ve expected from Yeonjung throughout the competition. Emphasize her range and her belting because she can do it effortlessly and that’s also what Korea loves so it works perfectly. Hard to argue with the strategy or the performance, as she was undoubtedly impressive.
Yeonjung won 58 to 41 over Siyeon.
Thought the result was fair and expected. Just glad Siyeon got to the end and got to showcase a diverse array of her talents, from ballad (GIVE ME AN OST) to rock (listen to Dreamcatcher) to blues (GIVE ME MORE OSTS). Yeonjung had built-in advantages sure, but it’s not like she’s not recognized as one of the best girl group vocalists regardless, so for Siyeon to even be associated with her is nice. Congrats to Yeonjung.

Siyeon had a lot to say after: "What's my opinion of Yeonjung's performance? What the fuck do you think my opinion is of it? I think it was bullshit. Put that in. I don't fucking care. What's my opinion of her performance? Shit. She beat me with three fucking songs."

Continued: "What the fuck do you mean? 'What is my opinion of her performance?' How can you ask me a question like that? I'm pissed off to lose a fucking contest, and you ask me my opinion of her performance?"

Strong from Siyeon after the show: "All the people that were rooting on me to fail, at the end of the day, they have to wake up tomorrow and have the same life that they had before they woke up today. They have the same personal problems they had today."

More: "I'm going to continue to live the way I want to live and continue to do the things that I want to do with me and Dreamcatcher and be happy with that. They can get a few days being happy off this result, but they have to get back to the real world at some point."
