When I reviewed Rain‘s “The Best Present“, I thought it was a bit odd for a comeback single from him after a three-year absence and with Psy producing, as I figured he’d want to declare himself back with a bang instead of a rather safe effort. It wasn’t necessarily bad, it was just sorta there. That remains true regardless of the content, but it’s nevertheless cool that “The Best Present” was basically a proposal song for Kim Tae Hee.

“When I am so exhausted that I’m about to just collapse,
When I am so close to giving up everything,
You were the only one who got me,
You were the only one who held me,
Yes, it was you,
People tell me that I’m nothing,
But you tell me then that I’m the only one,
No matter where I am, no matter how lost I am,
You look at me with a smile on your face.
You are the best thing I have, a gift from the world,
I want to dream the same dream with you,
Your name that lasts forever, the biggest happiness,
I want to wake up and fall asleep with you.
I promise I’ll keep you safe with all I have,
I promise I’ll hold you in my arms,
Wherever you walk,
I’ll make sure that that becomes your path,
So that I can reach you,
Your smile that shines brighter than the sun,
You shine brighter than the wedding dress,
These tears are tears of joy,
The scent of these tears,
Walking towards me.
You are the best thing I have, a gift from the world,
I want to dream the same dream with you,
Your name that lasts forever, the biggest happiness,
I want to wake up and fall asleep with you.
On that ring on your ring finger,
I promise for eternity, everything.
You are the best thing I have, a gift from the world,
I want to dream the same dream with you,
Your name that lasts forever, the biggest happiness,
I want to wake up and fall asleep with you.”

Rain also talked about this in his interview for the comeback.

I figured the song was talking about Kim Tae Hee, but I didn’t know they were already engaged and were waiting to make the announcement, essentially doing so through “The Best Present”.
It didn’t really sound like a Rain comeback effort because it wasn’t one, and for good reason.
