Oh My Girl have come back with “A-ing“, which is not the legendary Orange Caramel track, but is actually some kind of fusion track of aegyo and reggae.
I like the campy aegyo of Orange Caramel and I like reggae, so hypothetically I should love this. However, too often I felt like they weren’t so much being over-the-top with the aegyo as much as trying to make it genuine, especially in the vocals themselves (my primary complaint with “Liar Liar” as well). Furthermore, the reggae aspects of the instrumental and the vocals were drowned out more often than not by stuff that made it more fit for a children’s program theme song than anything else.
While Oh My Girl definitely updated Papaya‘s “Listen To Me” to fit modern tastes, they made the mistake of keeping the horrible first generation girl group cutesy vocal tone, which is what really made it feel dated.

I guess I just hoped they would go a lot more reggae-heavy with the instrumental (especially after hearing Wonder Girls‘ “Why So Lonely“) and scale down the aegyo a bit. Instead, they basically kept all the worst parts about first generation songs and did little to modernize the instrumental.
Well, at least the rap section stood out (probably because it was in a human voice), and to be fair, the song is extremely happy if that’s your thing. It’s just not to my liking at all.

Oh My Girl have the visuals, but the music video didn’t captivate or anything, and quite frankly the Tetris concept of the original music video would’ve been a far better option.
It did seem like the choreography had moments that could stick out, but even most of that was rather simple.
Oh well, at least there was the weed.
