Because Jesus loves us all, Lil Boi, Basick, and Hwasa teamed up on a single named “Call Me” recently. While one could argue that there was more potential in a song with those three involved, it certainly seemed to live up to expectations in the end.
Any funk influence in hip-hop is welcome, as is any brass, and that helped make the instrumental far more interesting than the usual fare for me. Besides the verses, probably my favorite part was the post-chorus where they name-check locations and work them into a sing-songy rap. Hwasa’s slow down was also a nice change of pace that accentuated the rapid-fire styles of both Lil Boi and Basick.
This would’ve been a solid track without great rapping because I enjoyed the new-ish twist from the instrumental and production. However, it only lived up to expectations because the two rappers came through and killed their verses. Perhaps they could’ve gone with something louder and more impactful, but for my money they managed to work this song concept out just fine.
