Truedy of ‘Unpretty Rapstar 2’ allegedly says she isn’t black, which answers questions

The ethnicity of ‘Unpretty Rapstar 2‘ contestant Truedy has been probably the most asked about/wondered about question during the season, and a fan of the show supposedly messaged her on Instagram to get clarification on this issue. Truedy responded back, allegedly saying that she was not black but that she loved black culture.

Alright.

Leading off, I should probably mention we don’t know for sure if this is legit yet. However, I don’t think it’s that unlikely for this to be true and it certainly looks legit, hence the fact that I’m writing about it.

And if it is legit, yikes. I said after the ‘Unpretty Rapstar 2’ music video was released that I hope she’s part-black because otherwise her lyrics are sorta cringe. Well, I said that because she almost constantly name-checks black people or makes allusions to being related to black people. And while I haven’t been keeping track explicitly, through two songs and like three verses, I think she’s made mention of black people in some form about four or five times already.

It’s uh … it’s weird, right? Like when B.A.P says they want to be reborn black. It’s … just awkward?

People get all bent out of shape when you mention cultural appropriation, but seriously, what if she’s not part black? Honestly how much closer to unofficial blackface do you want to get? And besides, no matter how you feel about that angle, it would be especially shitty given the narrative on ‘Unpretty Rapstar 2’. She can’t cry about how much she’s compared to Yoon Mi Rae, and how people are saying she doesn’t have her own identity, when she purposefully styles her flow and delivery after Yoon Mi Rae, covers “Black Happiness“, and styles herself to look like Yoon Mi Rae as well.

An easy comparison to help Asian entertainment fans understand is the weeaboos or Koreaboos that everybody disses. You may not want to go nuts over it, but it fucking weirds you out when somebody goes full weeaboo/Koreaboo in the comments, right? Like it’s awkward, and you want to tell them to get a grip because they’re not actually Asian, and that’s just the way I feel about this here. Because if she’s not part black, not only is she pulling off some kind of Rachel Dolezal deal, but she’s basically literally taking Yoon Mi Rae’s career, past and present. Given that Yoon Mi Rae is still trying to make it in the mainstream, it was sort of awkward before anyway, but it would be especially shitty if she turned out to mainly be cosplaying Yoon Mi Rae and then hits the mainstream ahead of her because of winning the show or something of that nature.

Ugh.

Don’t get me wrong, though, I don’t hate Truedy at all. I don’t think she’s acting maliciously, I actually think she’s great at what she does, and I think she’s currently at the front of the field on the ‘Unpretty Rapstar 2’. However, this stuff being true would make it really awkward to watch her and take her seriously.

People are free to disagree with that, and I know many will, but even if you don’t feel like there’s anything wrong with her “tribute to” or “admiration for” black people, the whole Yoon Mi Rae career-stealing angle still makes it ring shitty for me, regardless.

I would honestly prefer for this to be bullshit, because she’s a talent.
